Carlos Montemayor is a Professor of Philosophy at San Francisco State University (SFSU), currently on leave for Academic Year 2024/2025. He holds a PhD in Philosophy with a Certificate in Cognitive Science from Rutgers University and a JD in Law from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. His research bridges philosophy of mind, epistemology, and cognitive science, with a focus on time perception, consciousness, and ethical AI.
Key contributions include his book Minding Time, which argues for an analog account of time perception, and co-authored works like Consciousness, Attention, and Conscious Attention and Knowledge, Dexterity, and Attention. He co-edited Quanta and Mind, exploring quantum mechanics and philosophy of mind. His recent projects include the Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute and the SFSU Ethical AI graduate certificate program.
Research interests emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, including the interplay between consciousness and attention, the ethics of AI, and the philosophical implications of temporal cognition. He has been a visiting scholar at institutions exploring AI ethics and cognitive science, and his work frequently engages with legal philosophy and human rights through his legal background.
