Joseph L. Clarke

Joseph L. Clarke is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Art History at the University of Toronto, with cross-appointments to the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. His work bridges architectural history, sound studies, and media theory, focusing on the interplay between modernity and traditional forms of social life.

Clarke’s research explores how architecture generates communication and community. He has written extensively on acoustic space and architectural theory, including his award-winning book Echo’s Chambers: Architecture and the Idea of Acoustic Space (2021), and is currently investigating the evolution of open office design and modern sacred architecture. His work combines archival research with formal analysis, informed by professional experience at leading architectural firms.
