Dr. Joseph M. Kruger is an Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at Lamar University. He holds a Ph.D. in Geophysics from the University of Arizona (1991), an M.S. from the University of Texas at El Paso (1983), and a B.S. in Geology/Physics from Appalachian State University (1980). His academic roles include chairing the Arts and Sciences Faculty Council and administering the departmental computer lab. Kruger actively engages in geophysical research, public outreach (e.g., school presentations), and media consultation on geophysical topics.
Research interests span seismic reflection imaging, structural geology, and geophysical exploration techniques applied to continental and planetary settings. His work includes lunar regolith studies, basin analysis, and crustal deformation processes in regions like Idaho, Arizona, and Kansas. He has advised undergraduate researchers and graduate students in geophysics and geology.
Publications focus on geophysical methods (seismic, gravity, magnetic, and GPR) applied to tectonic and environmental problems. Recent work explores lunar water detection and Neogene basin evolution. His earlier studies addressed Ouachita orogeny geophysics and kimberlite delineation.
Service includes leadership roles at Idaho State University (2000s) and current IRIS Board representation. He has reviewed manuscripts and proposals for journals and agencies since 1995.
