Joseph Kerstein is a Professor of Accounting at the Sy Syms School of Business, Yeshiva University. He holds a PhD from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA from New York University, and a BA from the University of Cincinnati (summa cum laude). Prior to joining Yeshiva, he served as Chairman of the Stan Ross Department of Accountancy at Baruch College (2002-2005). His research focuses on earnings management, earnings quality, taxation, and health care economics. He is a licensed New York CPA.
Key research interests include anti-earnings management behavior, book-tax differences, and the interplay between earnings management and aggressive tax planning. His work has been published in top-tier journals such as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, and the New England Journal of Medicine. Notable accolades include a doctoral fellowship from the University of Pennsylvania and an Article of the Year award from the Association for Health Services Research.
Professor Kerstein teaches courses in taxation and financial accounting. His work bridges accounting theory and practice, with recent studies addressing climate risk in corporate finance and international comparisons of firm performance under environmental pressures. He maintains offices at both Yeshiva's Wilf and Beren campuses.
