Dr. Joseph Kasule is a Research Fellow at the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR), Makerere University. He holds an interdisciplinary PhD in Social Studies from Makerere University and focuses on coloniality/decoloniality, cultural anthropology, and political power dynamics. His current project compares colonial mentalities in Norway and Uganda through case studies of the Sámi people and Buganda region, challenging West-centric decolonial discourse.
Key research areas include Islam in Africa, secularism, and the intersection of violence with colonial structures. He co-leads the NORHED II project 'Decolonizing Epistemologies' with Bergen University. His publications include Islam in Uganda (2022), Historical Dictionary of Uganda (2022), and forthcoming works on Sámi-Buganda comparative studies.
Dr. Kasule teaches cultural anthropology at MISR and actively contributes to decolonial knowledge production through public intellectualism. His work emphasizes reconciling university disciplines with external intellectual practices to foster non-violent epistemic orders.
