Dr. Joseph John Viscomi is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Historical Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, and serves as the Birkbeck Director of the Raphael Samuel History Centre. He specializes in Mediterranean history and anthropology, focusing on migration, environment, and temporality. His research examines Italian and Egyptian interconnections, depopulation in Southern Italy, and cross-disciplinary methodologies. Viscomi holds a PhD from the University of Michigan (2016) and has been affiliated with institutions like NYU and the University of Helsinki. He has authored books such as Migration at the End of Empire (2024) and co-edited An Anthropology of Crosslocations (2024). Awards include the Rome Prize in Modern Italian Studies. He supervises doctoral students and teaches modules on Mediterranean history, migration, and environmental studies.
