Joseph Hesseman serves as a Part-Time Lecturer in Bassoon at Wittenberg University's Music Department since 1997 and concurrently teaches music in Centerville School District. A retired military band veteran, he holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Wright State University and graduated from the U.S. Armed Forces School of Music. His instructional expertise spans 30+ years, with students consistently earning superior ratings at OMEA events.
His research focuses on bassoon pedagogy, wind ensemble performance techniques, and cross-genre musical adaptation. Performance specialties include classical repertoire, jazz improvisation, and collaborative chamber works.
Honors & Awards:
- Two-time recipient of the George S. Howard Citation of Musical Excellence
- Wright State University Outstanding Music Alumni Award (2006)
- Concerto Competition Winner at Wright State University
Performance affiliations include the Springfield Symphony Woodwind Quintet, US Air Force Band of Flight (13 recorded compositions), and collaborations with artists like Doc Severinsen and Lionel Hampton. He coaches at Springfield Youth Symphony Retreats and Kaleidoscope Orchestra Camp.
