Joseph Friedberg is Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center. He serves as Thoracic Surgeon-in-Chief of Temple University Health System, Vice Chair of Surgical Services in the Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery, and Co-Director of the Temple Health Mesothelioma and Pleural Disease Program.
His research interests include:
- Utilizing the abdominal cavity for respiration
- Detection and treatment of pulmonary air leaks
- Mesothelioma translational and clinical research
- Lung cancer translational and clinical research
Dr. Friedberg’s clinical expertise lies in mesothelioma and other pleural disorders, advanced lung cancer, chest wall tumors, and mediastinal tumors. His work bridges cutting-edge surgical innovation with comprehensive patient care, particularly in complex thoracic oncology cases.
He has received multiple honors, including:

Dr. Friedberg is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is an active member of several professional societies including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), International Mesothelioma Interest Group (iMig), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), American College of Surgeons (ACS), General Thoracic Surgical Club (GTSC), and Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society (ECTSS). His training includes a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a residency in General Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, an MD from Harvard Medical School, and a BASc in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania College of Engineering and Applied Science. He leads a multidisciplinary team focused on thoracic oncology and surgical innovation, with strong affiliations across Temple Health and Fox Chase Cancer Center.
