Joseph E. Gaugler is the Distinguished McKnight University Professor and Robert L. Kane Endowed Chair in Long-Term Care and Aging at the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health. He directs the Center for Healthy Aging and Innovation and the BOLD Public Health Center of Excellence on Dementia Caregiving. His research focuses on Alzheimer's disease, long-term care systems, and family caregiving, with expertise in mixed methods and implementation science.
Education: PhD (2000) and MS (1996) in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University, BA (1995) in Psychology/History from Gustavus Adolphus College.
Research Interests: Alzheimer's/long-term care effectiveness, dementia caregiving interventions, psychosocial services for older adults, and implementation science. His work bridges applied gerontology and public health policy.
Grants & Leadership: Leads major initiatives like the EMBRACE AD/ADRD Roybal Center and the StARS Center. Has secured over $100M in NIH/NIA funding for aging-related research. Serves on editorial boards of Gerontologist and Journal of the American Medical Directors Association.
Awards: Includes the M. Powell Lawton Distinguished Contribution Award (2011), Gordon Streib Award (2015), and Expertscape World Expert in Caregivers (2021). Honored as an Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland (2020).
