Dr. Joseph Devanny is a Senior Lecturer in National Security Studies at King’s College London’s Department of War Studies. He holds a PhD in political theory from the University of Cambridge and degrees in European Studies and Political Science. His research focuses on national security strategy, cyber statecraft, and cybersecurity policy. He has held fellowships at the Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security (RISCS) and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO).
Devanny’s academic roles include Deputy Director of the Centre for Defence Studies and affiliations with the Cyber Security Research Group, King’s Centre for the Study of Intelligence, and Latin American Security Research Group. His work addresses global cybersecurity challenges, including Mexico’s cyber policy stagnation under AMLO, AI’s foreign policy implications, and cyber diplomacy.
He has contributed to projects funded by the EPSRC and Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, emphasizing democratic cyber power and national security reform. His publications explore cyber strategy, emerging technologies, and geopolitical cybersecurity dynamics. Devanny’s teaching spans national security studies, cyber diplomacy, and intelligence policy.
