Joseph Cox serves as a Senior Scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) and Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health within McGill University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. He maintains dual affiliations with the Infectious Diseases and Immunity in Global Health Program and Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation at RI-MUHC, plus clinical duties in the MUHC's Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases.
His educational background includes:
- MD
- M.Sc.
Dr. Cox's research centers on sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI), with primary focus on HIV and HCV epidemiology using quantitative methods and implementation science. He investigates health risks and outcomes among key vulnerable populations:
- Men who have sex with men (MSM)
- People with substance use disorders
- Incarcerated populations
His work emphasizes evaluation of prevention/care interventions, particularly examining pandemic impacts on STBBI services. Recent publication analysis (2020-2023) shows dominant themes in PrEP implementation, hepatitis C elimination strategies, and health disparities among sexual minority men during COVID-19, consistently employing mixed-methods approaches across Canadian urban centers.
No scientific awards were documented in available sources.
Dr. Cox leads the multi-site Engage cohort study tracking PrEP uptake among MSM in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. His research involves extensive national collaborations with public health agencies and correctional facilities, focusing on intervention scalability for marginalized groups. Current projects examine virtual care adoption, structural barriers to HCV treatment, and resilience factors in HIV prevention.
