Joseph Calabrese

Joseph Calabrese is a Professor of Biology at Lock Haven University's Biological and Health Sciences Department. He holds advanced degrees including a Ph.D. in Environmental Microbiology from West Virginia University (1988) and has extensive postdoctoral research experience at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory (1990-94). His research focuses on environmental microbiology and microbial ecology, with specializations in aquatic systems, food products, wetland sediments, and animal systems. Current projects include antibiotic-resistant bacteria prevalence, ancient bacteria in enhydro agates, constructed wetland treatments for landfill leachate, and bacterial flora in bats with White Nose Syndrome.

He teaches courses like Environmental Microbiology, Microbiology, and Biology Senior Seminar. Notable contributions include co-developing the Great Lakes Field Ecology Internship aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara, combining ecological research with sailing training. His work spans over three decades, with peer-reviewed publications on topics like silver nanoparticle synthesis, acid mine drainage treatment, and microbial responses to environmental stressors. He actively collaborates with students on projects that bridge microbiology, geology, and environmental science.

His presentations and awards include first-place recognitions for groundbreaking studies on ancient microbes in agates and fungal antibiotic discovery. Research interests emphasize practical applications of microbiology to environmental challenges and wildlife health.
