Joseph C. Furgal is an Associate Professor in the Chemistry Department at Bowling Green State University’s College of Arts and Sciences. With a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (2015) and a B.S. from the University of Detroit (2010), he leads research on hybrid organic-silicon materials. His work spans self-healing polymers, molecular separations, and high-surface-area hybrids, addressing applications in healthcare, space exploration, and environmental sustainability.
- Ph.D., University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 2015
- B.S., University of Detroit, Detroit, 2010
Research Interests: Furgal’s group develops photochemically responsive hybrid materials using fluoride-catalyzed silsesquioxane chemistry. Two key projects include:
- Self-Healing Materials: Light-driven dynamic covalent systems for fatigue sensors, medical implants, and space/underwater coatings.
- Molecular Separation: High-performance polymers for chiral drug purification and CO2 capture.
Publication Trends: His recent work (2018–2021) emphasizes green synthesis methods, fluoride catalysis, and environmental applications, with a focus on bridging organic and silicon-based chemistries.
Labs & Teams: The Furgal Materials Workshop explores scalable solutions for military, medical, and climate challenges.
