James F. Reuther, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. His research bridges organic, polymer, and materials chemistry with applications in environmental remediation, chiral nanomaterials, and self-assembled systems. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Virginia Tech, Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry from North Carolina State University, and conducted postdoctoral work in peptide chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin.

Reuther’s research focuses on dynamically crosslinked nanoparticle networks for water treatment and scalable chiral polymer nanostructures via asymmetric polymerization-induced self-assembly. His group develops materials for regenerable water purification, nerve agent detoxification, and chiral plasmonic systems. Recent work highlights multi-responsive nanogels and helical polymer scaffolds for enantiomeric separations.
His publications analyze dynamic covalent chemistry, helical polymer architectures, and environmentally sustainable materials. Collaborative projects include low-loss dielectric inks and oxime-functionalized nanofabrics. Teaching includes Organic Chemistry I and graduate polymer synthesis laboratories emphasizing modern techniques like RAFT and ATRP.
