Professor Joseph Bateman holds the title of Professor of Molecular Neuroscience at King's College London, affiliated with the Department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. His research focuses on understanding neuronal function and development through the study of key pathways and genes involved in neurological diseases. Two primary research areas include mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases and mTOR signaling's role in epilepsy.
Education: BSc and PhD from University College London (UCL). Awards include a Cancer Research UK Postdoctoral Fellowship (2002) and a Royal Society Research Grant (2005). His work has been supported by grants from organizations like MRC and Alzheimer's Research UK.
Research Interests:
- Neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson's, Huntington's)
- Mitochondrial dysfunction and its effects on neurons
- mTOR signaling pathways in neurogenesis and disease
- Neuronal metabolism and mitochondrial stress responses
Key Collaborators include Dr. Sila Ultanir (Crick Institute), Prof. Navdeep Chandel (Northwestern University), and Prof. Jernej Murn (UC Riverside). His lab, Bateman Research Group, is based at the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute, King's College London.
Grants and Projects: Includes studies on epilepsy precision medicine, mTOR pathway diseases, and mitochondrial disease treatments. Active projects focus on polyamine treatments for mitochondrial diseases and TSC brain research.
