Jernej Ule is the Van Geest Professor of Neurodegeneration Research at King's College London and Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) at King's. He leads the RNA Networks Laboratory, focused on understanding RNA's role in neurodegenerative diseases like ALS and FTD. His research integrates biochemistry and computational biology to map protein-RNA interactions. Key roles include Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute and Professor of Molecular Neuroscience at UCL prior to joining King's in 2022.
- Affiliations: UK DRI, Francis Crick Institute, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN)
- Education: BSc from University of Ljubljana (1999), PhD from Rockefeller University (2004) under Robert B. Darnell
Research interests center on RNA networks in neuronal function and disease, including RNA-binding proteins, condensates, and alternative splicing. His lab developed methods like iCLIP for transcriptome-wide analysis. Collaborations include Andrea Serio, Sonia Gandhi, and Pietro Fratta. Awards include the RNA Society Mid-Career Award (2020) and Person of the Year 2019.
Key grants include a Wellcome Trust £5.4M award (2023) for gene regulation studies in neurodegeneration. He leads projects on RNA metabolism, protein aggregation, and tau-RNA interactions.
His lab is part of the RNA Biology Research Interest Group and contributes to the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute. Future work emphasizes therapeutic strategies targeting RNA dysregulation in ALS/FTD.
