Joseph A. Schroeder is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Neuroscience Program at Connecticut College, where he joined the faculty in 2004 and has served as Neuroscience Program Director since 2013. He received his B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College and Ph.D. in Cell Biology and Pathology from Thomas Jefferson University in 2001.
Dr. Schroeder's research employs a multi-level approach to understanding neurobiological mechanisms of behavior through:
- Neurobiology of analgesia
- Neurobiological mechanisms of psychostimulant related behavior
- Animal models of neurodegenerative disease, schizophrenia and drug abuse
- Heavy metal neurotoxicity
- Spatial navigation learning and memory
- Psychology of sleep and ecological sleep pattern recording
His laboratory focuses on rodent behavioral pharmacology models of psychostimulant and opioid addiction, with emphasis on developing accessible models for undergraduate research. He believes a "multidisciplinary, multiplaned approach is the best avenue for understanding the complexities of brain and behavior."
Dr. Schroeder received the 2011 John S. King Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, recognizing his "high standards of teaching excellence and concern for students."
He teaches Behavioral Neuroscience, Sensation and Perception, The Neurobiology of Disease, Cognitive Brain Imaging, Evolutionary Psychology, Psychopharmacology, Psychology of Sleep, Introduction to Psychology, and first-year seminars on Genius, Creativity and the Brain and Toxins and the Nervous System.
