Dr. Joseph A. Grace is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales Faculty of Medicine and a vascular interventionalist with over three decades of clinical experience. Affiliated with the Dermatology, Phlebology and Fluid Mechanics Research Laboratory at St Vincent's Centre for Applied Medical Research, he maintains an active clinical practice at the North Shore Medical Group in Sydney while pursuing doctoral research.
- MB,BS(HONS) from University of NSW Sydney (1988)
- MSc(Research) from University of NSW Sydney (2020-2025)
- PhD candidate at UNSW (current)
- Fellow of the Australasian College of Phlebology (FACP)
- Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP)
Dr. Grace's research focuses on the intersection of phlebology, medical adhesives, and regenerative medicine. His work examines the physicochemical properties of cyanoacrylate-based embolic agents, particularly their polymerization behavior and tissue interactions. He has pioneered research on formaldehyde release from medical adhesives and its clinical implications, contributing significantly to regulatory discussions on device classification. His expertise extends to minimally invasive vascular interventions, including endovenous laser ablation, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, and foam embolotherapy for venous disorders.
Analysis of Dr. Grace's publication record reveals a consistent trajectory toward improving procedural safety in vascular interventions. His work bridges laboratory research with clinical application, particularly in understanding how medical adhesives interact with biological tissues. The research demonstrates increasing focus on regulatory implications and patient safety considerations, with recent publications influencing clinical guidelines for cyanoacrylate closure techniques.
- Teaching Recognition Award from UNSW St Vincent's Clinical School (2021) for innovative teaching sessions during clinical placement restrictions
Dr. Grace actively mentors medical students and co-supervises honours students at UNSW. He has developed and facilitated simulated clinical skills training using the Simulation Centre, particularly for international medical students. His research has contributed to national and international discussions on regulatory oversight of medical adhesives, with direct impact on clinical protocols for embolization procedures. He has presented his findings at leading international conferences including the Union Internationale de Phlébologie and the German Society of Phlebology.
Based at the Dermatology, Phlebology and Fluid Mechanics Research Laboratory at St Vincent's Centre for Applied Medical Research, Dr. Grace collaborates with Associate Professor Kurosh Parsi and Dr. David Connor on his doctoral research. His clinical work at North Shore Medical Group informs his research approach, creating a continuous feedback loop between bench science and bedside application. With over 4,000 vascular interventions and more than 500 autologous biomaterial regenerative procedures performed, his research is grounded in extensive clinical experience.
