Kurosh Parsi

Professor Kurosh Parsi is a dermatologist, phlebologist, and vascular anomalies specialist at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, where he serves as Head of the Department of Dermatology. He is also Program Head at the Dermatology, Phlebology and Fluid Mechanics Research Laboratory within the St. Vincent’s Centre for Applied Medical Research. Additionally, he holds conjoint and adjunct professorships at the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney, respectively.

• Research Focus: Basic science and clinical research in vascular dermatology, phlebology, fluid mechanics of sclerosant foams, and interactions of sclerosants with coagulation mechanisms.
• Education: MBBS (University of Sydney), MSc (Medicine, UNSW), PhD (UNSW), LLM (University of Salford).
• Labs: Leads research at St. Vincent’s Centre for Applied Medical Research and collaborates with the University of Sydney’s School of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering.

Research Interests include:

• Vascular Dermatology: Pigmented purpuric dermatoses (PPD), vascular malformations, and reticulate eruptions.
• Phlebology: Deep vein sclerosis, sclerothrombus characterization, and hemostatic abnormalities in vascular conditions.
• Fluid Mechanics: Physicochemical properties of sclerosant foams, foam stability, and computational fluid dynamics in venous interventions.
• Legal Medicine: Consumer protection laws, comparative medical legislation, and intellectual property in healthcare.

Publications span 122 journal articles, 16 book chapters, and 7 conference abstracts. Recent work focuses on detergent sclerosants’ effects on blood cells, foam rheology, and vascular disease diagnostics using ultrasound and D-dimer analysis.

Awards include the Australasian College of Phlebology’s Gold Medal (2018) and Visiting Professorship at the Royal Society of Medicine (2019). He has received honors from international societies in Argentina and France.

Supervision involves 2 PhD graduates, 4 Masters students, and over 25 undergraduate/ILP students, including collaborations with biomedical engineering and medical students.
