Joseph A. Carrese, MD, MPH, FACP, is a Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a faculty member of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. He is affiliated with the Division of General Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and serves as Chair of its Ethics Committee and Chair of an Institutional Review Board at the School of Medicine. Dr. Carrese graduated from Williams College (BA), the University at Buffalo School of Medicine (MD), and earned an MPH from the University of Washington through the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program.
His research focuses on clinical ethics and professionalism, particularly in medical education and cultural diversity considerations. He has authored peer-reviewed articles in journals such as JAMA, BMJ, and Academic Medicine. Dr. Carrese has held leadership roles including Board member of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (2012–2015), founding member and Chair of the Academy for Professionalism in Healthcare (2012–2018), and Fellow of the Hastings Center.
His articles span ethical challenges in opioid recovery, pandemic research oversight, and ICU patient dignity. Awards include the National Award for Scholarship in Medical Education (2008) and ASBH Presidential Citation (2011). Dr. Carrese also maintains an active clinical practice in internal medicine at Bayview Medical Offices.
