His research examines institutional shifts in Spanish colonial systems, Bourbon reforms, and economic structures in Catalonia and the Philippines. He has led seven ministerial projects since 1991, focusing on fiscal policies, free trade, and the social implications of colonialism. His publications include books and chapters on imperial dynamics, slavery, and postcolonial transitions, often co-edited with peers like M.D. Elizalde.
The 15 most recent articles highlight recurring themes: Bourbon-era economic institutions, colonial trade, and Philippine history. A 2015 medical article on hepatopulmonary syndrome appears as an outlier, suggesting interdisciplinary engagement. His work integrates historical analysis with economic theory to assess colonial collapse and institutional resilience.
