Josep Maria Fradera Barcelo is a full Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Pompeu Fabra University's Department of Humanities, where he has held a position since 1995. He coordinates the university's History Doctoral Program and serves as an ICREA Researcher at the Jaume Vicens Vives University Institute of History.
His research spans imperial history with particular focus on comparative colonial systems of European empires, citizenship development in imperial contexts, and Southeast Asian/American colonial history. Key teaching areas include Colonial and Contemporary American History, Pre-British and British India, and Comparative Colonial Systems of European Empires during Modern and Contemporary periods.
His recent publications demonstrate consistent scholarly output in imperial studies, with monographs examining citizenship frameworks across British, French, Spanish and American empires (2018), post-imperial transitions (2005), and colonial administration mechanisms (1999). The works reveal deep engagement with transnational governance structures and constitutional development within imperial contexts.
