Josef Ploner is a Senior Lecturer in International and Comparative Education at the Manchester Institute of Education (MIE), part of the University of Manchester's School of Environment, Education and Development (SEED). He specializes in international education, academic mobilities, and the intersections between education and migration in Europe. His research explores global migration patterns, diaspora communities, and learning through cultural heritage, tourism, and creative industries. He has held leadership roles including Programme Director for BA Management, Leadership and Leisure (2021-2023) and currently leads the innovative BA Education, Leadership and Culture program launching in 2024/25.
He holds a PhD in Tourism and Heritage Studies (Leeds Beckett University, 2011), MA in Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology (University of Vienna, 2003), and PGCert in Academic Practice (University of Hull, 2016). His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate programs emphasizing international and civic engagement components.
Research interests include: international student migration, intercultural learning in diverse societies, tourism as ideological contestation, and heritage as sites of memory formation. He co-edits the Journal of Tourism and Cultural Change and serves as External Examiner for MA Education at the University of Bath.
Key achievements include being a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and cultural preservation. His work has been cited in over 30 peer-reviewed publications and he actively collaborates across Europe and Asia in higher education research networks.
Ploner supervises PhD students focusing on topics like international higher education mobilities, resilience in nursing education, and transnational cultural heritage projects. His lab activities include exploring place-based education through urban cultural initiatives and digital learning spaces.
