Anton Popov is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Aston University, within the Department of Sociology and Policy at the School of Languages and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham and has extensive academic qualifications from institutions in Russia and the UK. His research focuses on social anthropology, particularly in postsocialist societies, exploring themes such as identity, transnationalism, ethnicity, youth culture, and cultural heritage. He coordinates the EU-funded 'Cultural Heritage and Identities of Europe’s Future' (CHIEF) project and has led multiple international research initiatives.
Education: Anton completed his BA/MA in Ethnology and World History at Kuban State University (Russia), followed by a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Birmingham. His postgraduate studies included research at the Institute for Ethnology and Anthropology in Moscow.
Research Interests: His work examines cultural production of identity, memory practices, and youth engagement with heritage. Key areas include Cossack subcultures, migrant communities in the Caucasus, and the intersection of history and activism in Europe. His methodologies emphasize ethnography, life story analysis, and qualitative research.
Awards: He received the 2018 Aston Achievement Award for Excellent Research, recognizing his contributions to sociocultural studies and interdisciplinary projects.
Advising & Grants: Anton supervises PhD students in transnational migration and identity studies. He has secured significant grants, including a €4.5M EU Horizon 2020 grant for CHIEF, and previously contributed to the MYPLACE project on youth and historical memory.
Labs/Teams: As CHIEF coordinator, he oversees a consortium of academic and cultural institutions. He collaborates with international networks, including the Association for Study of Nationalities and the British Sociological Association.
