Jose Sanchez Alonso-Mardones

Jose Sanchez Alonso-Mardones is a Research Fellow at the National Heart & Lung Institute, part of the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London. His research focuses on electrophysiology, membrane nanodomains, and cardiac disease mechanisms. He holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and has expertise in patch-clamp techniques and super-resolution microscopy.

• Education: Neuroscience Ph.D. (2012), Neurobiology degree

His research investigates nanoscale signaling in cardiomyocytes using advanced techniques like SICM (Scanning Ion Conductance Microscopy). Key areas include voltage-gated calcium channel localization, arrhythmia mechanisms, and neuro-cardiac junction dynamics. He has published extensively on ion channel behavior and cardiac physiology.

He leads a BHF-funded research group exploring neuro-cardiac junctions at nanometer precision, bridging neuroscience and cardiac disease research. His work addresses how membrane organization impacts cellular function in health and disease.

His current projects combine electrophysiology, microscopy, and molecular biology to study disease-related membrane disorganization. He collaborates with the Functional Microscopy group led by Prof. Julia Gorelik.
