Dr. Fernandez Castillo's research focuses on 20th-century and contemporary Spanish and Latin American literature, with particular expertise in modern Hispanic poetic traditions, especially the works of Octavio Paz and José Ángel Valente. His interdisciplinary approach integrates materialist and mystical thought in Hispanic poetry, representations of national identities in the Hispanic world, and the influence of Asian philosophy on Hispanic literary traditions. His work demonstrates a unique cross-cultural perspective shaped by his translation experience of Japanese poet Shinkichi Takahashi and Australian poet Judith Wright into Spanish.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent trajectory exploring poetic theory, comparative literature, historical memory, and intercultural connections. His scholarly output spans book publications, journal articles, book chapters, and creative translations, with particular emphasis on Spanish and Latin American literary traditions. Recent work has increasingly engaged with decolonial theory, environmental humanities in the Anthropocene era, and the intersection of politics and literature in contemporary Hispanic fiction.
Dr. Fernandez Castillo teaches courses in Spanish language, literature, and cultural studies, with his documented teaching including 'Women Through History' at La Trobe University. His international teaching career has equipped him with a distinctive perspective on Hispanic literature within global contexts, and his multilingual abilities (Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese) further enhance his comparative approach to literary studies.
