Jose Javier Verdugo Perona

Jose Javier Verdugo Perona is an Associate Professor in the Department of Experimental Sciences at the Faculty of Teacher Training, University of Valencia. His academic work centers on science education, particularly focusing on pedagogical content knowledge, teacher training, and science literacy.

His research interests include:

• Pre-service teacher education
• Socioscientific issues and argumentation
• Nature of science (NOS)
• Critical and reflective thinking in science education
• Environmental and sustainability education

His recent publications (2022–2025) show a consistent focus on understanding pre-service teachers' knowledge, attitudes, and argumentation skills regarding socioscientific issues, sustainability (particularly the UN Sustainable Development Goals), and science teaching. He has also contributed to studies on metacognition in problem-solving and chemistry education. His methodological approach often involves developing and validating assessment instruments for science and pedagogical knowledge.

Dr. Verdugo completed his doctoral studies at the University of Valencia in 2017 with a thesis on disciplinary and pedagogical content knowledge in primary science teachers. He is a member of the research group "CDC: Pedagogical school content knowledge: grounds of the teachers' instructional analysis and action".

He actively supervises theses and has contributed to numerous research projects in science education. His work bridges theory and practice in teacher education, aiming to improve science instruction through better understanding of teacher knowledge and student engagement with complex scientific issues.
