Josanne Francis is an award-winning steelpan musician and educator at the University of Maryland's School of Music. Her roles include Director of Steelbands and Lead Community Engagement Program Coordinator with the Office of the Provost's Center for Community Engagement. She engages with diverse musical styles such as traditional calypso, jazz, Indian, and European classical, collaborating with renowned artists and orchestras globally.
- Research Interests: Culturally-positioned community music, educational outreach, and Caribbean music traditions.
- Key Collaborations: Carnegie Hall, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and National Folk Festival.
- Awards: Second place in the 2023 Concerto Competition; recipient of the 2024 Mabel S Spencer Fellowship.
Her initiatives include founding Steel on Wheels LLC, co-directing the 2023 Caribbean halftime show, and serving as Artist in Residence mentor at Strathmore Music Center. She continues to lead community engagement programs and train music educators nationwide.
