Joris Berns is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Organization Studies, part of the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Tilburg University. His research focuses on behavioral decision-making, corporate governance, and corporate communication, particularly in contexts of organizational financial distress. He employs advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to analyze textual and audio data, such as earnings calls, to study executive communication strategies and their impact on stakeholders like security analysts.
Key research interests include CEO attention mechanisms, emotional expression in crises, and incongruence between verbal and paraverbal communication. His doctoral thesis (2022) explored how CEO cognition, emotion, and communication shape outcomes during corporate financial distress. Recent work highlights the role of tone of voice in influencing analyst recommendations and the interplay between ownership structures and emotional responses to organizational failure.
Berns teaches courses such as Academic and Vocational Skills OMS and Financial & Project Management. He actively participates in academic events, including the Strategic Management Society Annual Conference and EGOS Colloquium. He currently chairs the Tilburg University Young Academy committee, emphasizing institutional leadership roles.
