Norwegian University of Science and Technologyمعرفی
Jorid Hovden is a Professor in sociology of sports at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), with extensive expertise in gender relations within sport organizations. Her academic career spans over four decades, with scholarly contributions beginning in the 1980s and continuing with recent publications in 2024. She maintains an active research profile focusing on critical gender issues in sports, particularly examining power dynamics, inclusion/exclusion mechanisms, and gender policy implementation across various sport contexts.
Hovden completed her doctoral dissertation in 2000 titled 'Makt, motstand og ambivalens. Betydningar av kjønn i idretten' (Power, Resistance and Ambivalence: Significances of Gender in Organized Sport) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. Her academic foundation was established with a master's thesis in 1980 from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences on health dimensions in the Norwegian Sports Federation's value framework.
Hovden's research interests center on gender relations and the gendering of sport organizations, with specific attention to power dynamics, inclusion/exclusion mechanisms in sport policy, leadership and gender in sport organizations, gender policy strategies, and intersections of sport with social class and migration. Her work consistently applies feminist perspectives to examine body, sport, and modernity, with particular focus on gender representation in sports media and coaching contexts. Her research demonstrates how gender operates as a fundamental organizing principle within sport structures, influencing everything from policy implementation to everyday interactions.
Her publication record reveals a remarkable consistency in thematic focus over several decades, with recent work expanding into contemporary issues like Muslim women boxers' identity negotiations, integration policies in football clubs, and gender dynamics in emerging sport forms like esports. While maintaining a strong foundation in Norwegian sport contexts, her work has increasingly engaged with international comparative perspectives and theoretical developments in organizational studies.
Hovden has held significant academic leadership roles including Pro-rector of Finnmark University College, Coordinator of the Research Group on Rural Women at Finnmark University College, and President of the Norwegian Association for Women and Gender Studies. She has served on the extended board of the International Sociology of Sport Association (ISSA) and led the master program in sport studies. Her scholarly activities include approximately 50 national and international conference presentations, guest editorships for special journal issues, editorial board memberships, and service on expert committees assessing academic qualifications in Norway and internationally.
Her work demonstrates sustained engagement with both theoretical development in sport sociology and practical applications for advancing gender equity in sport organizations. She has contributed significantly to understanding how gender operates within sport structures while maintaining attention to intersectional dimensions including migration status, religious identity, and social class.
