Jorge Pérez is the Peter T. Flawn Centennial Professor and Department Chair of Iberian Literatures and Cultures at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his academic work bridges Latin American cinema, queer theory, and cultural studies.

His research focuses on Latin American cinema and media, queer culture and theory, and intersections of film, fashion, identity, and stardom in Spain. His publications include the books Cultural Roundabouts: Spanish Film and Novel on the Road (2011), Confessional Cinema: Religion, Film, and Modernity in Spain’s Development Years (2017), and Fashioning Spanish Cinema: Costume, Identity, and Stardom (2021). He is currently working on a book titled Celebrity Culture and Media in Spain, examining stardom beyond the film industry.

He has co-edited The Latin American Road Movie (2016) and a special issue of the Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies (2009) on Spanish popular music. His doctoral students explore topics like race and migration in Spanish media, Spanish queer cinema, and videogames cultures in Spain. Courses he has taught include ILA 387 Queer Cinema in Latin America/Spain and SPN 379C Capstone Seminar in Literature and Cultures.
