Dr. Joost Pikkert is an Associate Professor at Trinity Western University, specializing in multilingual education and intercultural community development. He holds a PhD in Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1990), alongside MA and BTh degrees. His career includes 20 years in Indonesia, serving as Associate Professor and Academic Dean at Taylor College and Seminary, and consulting for institutions like the Asian Development Bank. His research focuses on multilingual education policy, rural education accessibility, and language vitality in Papua, Indonesia.
Dr. Pikkert’s expertise spans linguistics, missiology, and agricultural education. He has authored over 30 publications, including works on Papua’s educational mapping projects and mother-tongue based curricula. Notable recognitions include nominations for Indonesia’s Anthropologist Award (2016) and UNESCO’s International Reading Award (2001–2002).
His advisory work includes strategic planning for isolated communities in Papua and curriculum reviews for teacher training institutions. Collaborations with the Indonesian Department of Education and NGOs have shaped national education policies. Dr. Pikkert also contributes to adult literacy programs and has developed educational materials in over 35 languages.
His current interests include competency-based education and theological studies on the love of God. He has served on advisory boards for organizations such as The Charitable Trust of Canada and Wycliffe Bible Translators of Canada. His interdisciplinary approach bridges anthropology, linguistics, and pedagogy to address global educational challenges.
