Michele Petersen is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics (Dallas, TX) and Trinity Western University (TWU), specializing in Scripture Engagement and Applied Linguistics. She has served with Wycliffe since 1989, working across West and Central Africa in literacy, arts-based scripture dissemination, and trauma healing. Her expertise spans linguistics education, vernacular media creation, and participatory methods in mission contexts. She co-developed the MA in World Arts program at GIAL and authored key texts on worship, arts, and scripture use.

Research Interests: Michelle focuses on leveraging local arts (music, drama, visual arts) to bridge cultural gaps in scripture engagement. She emphasizes participatory methods where communities co-create scripture-based materials that resonate with their traditions. Recent work explores trauma-informed approaches to mission work and the role of visual communication in multilingual Bible production.
Publications & Presentations: Over 20 years of publishing on scripture engagement strategies, including foundational works like Creating Local Arts Together and Worship and Mission for the Global Church. Key conference talks address topics like cross-cultural illustration design and drama-based scripture teaching.
Affiliations: SIL International consultant, Trauma Healing Institute facilitator, and active member of the Evangelical Missiological Society. Teaches courses like LIN 575 Scripture Engagement at GIAL and CanIL.
Grants & Impact: Developed curriculum for GIAL’s World Arts MA program, trained hundreds of literacy supervisors in Central African churches, and collaborated with 58+ radio stations across West Africa to produce scripture-infused media.
