Joonas Vola is a Researcher and Visiting Researcher at the Arctic Centre and Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lapland. His work focuses on the intersection of science, art, and politics in Arctic representation, employing performativity theory, semiotics, and sensory ethnography. He has led or collaborated in projects like AECED (2023–2026), ILA (2019–2023), and NEO-BEAR II (2014–2015), addressing topics such as Arctic development, neoliberal governance, and proximity tourism.
- Education: Ph.D. in Political Science (awarded University of Lapland's Thesis of the Year, 2023)
His research interests include Arctic epistemologies, documentation techniques, and ethical communication. Vola has produced 29 scholarly outputs since 2013, with recent works exploring anthropocene methodologies and sensory ethnography. He actively engages in international conferences and co-curates artistic projects like Maan ääni (2023). His work bridges academic and artistic practices to address political and environmental challenges in the Arctic.
