Professor Joonas Sirola holds a 50% academic appointment as Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and serves as Chief Physician at Kuopio University Hospital (KUH). His roles include Deputy Head of UEF's Institute of Clinical Medicine and leadership of the Clinical Research Centre, overseeing units like the Kuopio Musculoskeletal Research Unit. His research focuses on musculoskeletal disorders, osteoporosis prevention, and medical education innovation. He leads the OSTPRE project, a 30+ year longitudinal study on bone health in aging women, and pioneered randomized trials comparing hip replacement efficacy. His educational work emphasizes simulation and VR in surgical training, including organizing national arthroscopy courses.
