Jonnie Penn is an Associate Teaching Professor at the University of Cambridge, where he teaches the AI Ethics and Society master's program. He is also a Faculty Associate at Harvard University's Berkman Klein Center, a Research Fellow at St. Edmund’s College, and an Associate Fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (LCFI). His research explores historical connections between efficiency, authority, and technology, with a focus on AI ethics and 'decomputerisation.' Penn has held fellowships at MIT, Google, and the British National Academy of Writing.

Research interests include the societal implications of AI, the history of computing, and critiques of digital dependency. Awards include fellowships at MIT, Google, and the British National Academy of Writing, as well as an award-winning documentary series from his grassroots project The Buried Life, endorsed by Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey.
He advises on participatory action research and has led grants like the Mellon Foundation Sawyer Seminar on AI’s genealogy of power. Penn co-chairs workshops at conferences such as NeurIPS and ICML, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration.
