Michiel Bakker

Michiel Bakker is an Assistant Professor at MIT with appointments in the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS), the Sloan School of Management, and the Center for Constructive Communication (CCC) in the MIT Media Lab. He also serves as a Senior Research Scientist at Google DeepMind. His research focuses on large language models (LLMs), AI safety, and societal impacts of AI, particularly in human-AI interaction and collective decision-making.

Education: PhD in Computer Science (MIT, advised by Alex Pentland), M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Physics (TU Delft, with quantum computing research at QuTech and IBM Quantum). Entrepreneurial ventures include co-founding Bloomon and Lamudi Myanmar.

Research interests include LLM applications, ethical AI, fairness in decision systems, and AI-driven consensus-building. Recent work explores AI's role in conflict resolution (e.g., Israeli-Palestinian peacebuilders) and democratic deliberation.
