Dr. Jonathon Crewe is an Associate Professor in Film and Creative Writing at the London School of Film, Media and Design, University of West London. As an interdisciplinary researcher and practitioner, he teaches across Media, English, Creative Writing, and Film courses, emphasizing practice-based research methodologies and creative practice development.
His research focuses on:
- Representation of social hierarchies in media and literature
- White working-class identity in narrative texts
- Gender, power, and violence
- Ageism in British cinema
- Interdisciplinary creative practice
His recent creative outputs include the 2025 performance Go Gently, the 2024 arts output Ordnance, and the 2023 report Screening older age (collaborative with Dennis Olsen and Marcus Nicholls). His award-winning 2021 film face2face and 2023 conference presentation on Under the Radar highlight his work in community engagement frameworks.
Scientific awards include:
- Best Director at Alternative Film Festival (Canada)
- Best Director at Word Distribution Awards (USA)
- Finalist at Gold Movie Awards (UK)
He supervises PhD research in Creative Writing, Film Studies, and English Literature, with funding from Arts Council England, the Culture Capital Exchange, UWL KE Seed Fund, and the British Academy. His current ECIR-funded project Acting Against Ageism develops interdisciplinary approaches to age representation in media.
