Professor Jonathan Winterton is a Professor of Work and Employment at the Leeds University Business School, leading the Work and Employment Relations Division. His career includes academic roles at institutions like Napier University, Toulouse Business School, and Curtin University in Sarawak. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Leeds, alongside advanced degrees in Industrial Relations and Technology.
His research focuses on human capital formation, precarious work, and labour markets in the EU and ASEAN regions. Key areas include high-involvement work processes, skill mismatches, and modern slavery dynamics. Funding sources include the ILO, OECD, EU agencies, and national research bodies across multiple countries.
Professor Winterton's work emphasizes the interplay between work quality and human capital retention. He has advised on policy reforms in Lithuania, Malaysia, and France, with a focus on social dialogue and skill formation systems. Current research explores Industry 4.0 impacts, nurse retention strategies, and global production networks.
He supervises doctoral students including Dave Roberts, Danyi Zhou, Ying Zhang, and Wenqi Zhao. His teaching includes research methods and EU/ASEAN labour contexts. He contributes to the Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change (CERIC) and has published widely on topics spanning from aerospace restructuring to competency frameworks in military transitions.
