Jonathan Wilcox is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Iowa, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His work focuses on early medieval England, particularly Old English literature, language, and culture. He teaches courses on Beowulf, medieval riddles, Norse sagas, and Celtic literature, and has served two terms as department chair.
His research spans medieval manuscript studies, early Christian thought, and humor in Old English literature. Key publications include Ælfric's Prefaces (1994), Scraped, Stroked, and Bound (2013), and an upcoming monograph on laughter in early medieval England. His recent articles explore textual agency in riddles, Wulfstan’s homiletic methods, and humor in the Exeter Book. These works reflect interdisciplinary engagement with philology, material culture, and cognitive approaches to medieval texts.

Wilcox has held leadership roles in major scholarly organizations, including President of the Medieval Association of the Midwest and editor of the Old English Newsletter. He is affiliated with interdisciplinary research in book history and medieval material culture, contributing to edited volumes and collaborative projects on Anglo-Saxon manuscripts and homiletic traditions.
