Jonathan Wai is an Associate Professor and the 21st Century Endowed Chair in Education Policy at the University of Arkansas, Department of Education Reform, with a courtesy appointment in Psychology. He also serves as Affiliate Faculty in Educational Psychology at the University of Alabama. His research integrates psychology with education policy, focusing on spatial thinking, talent development, higher education equity, and science communication. Wai leads the Wai Lab and the SMART initiative, advocating for evidence-based policies to support gifted students and underrepresented groups.
Wai holds a Ph.D. in Quantitative Methods for Psychology from Vanderbilt University, with prior appointments at Duke University, Geisinger Health System, and Case Western Reserve University. His work bridges academic research and public scholarship, addressing systemic inequities in education through policy advocacy and empirical studies.
His research spans spatial reasoning’s role in STEM success, the impact of universal gifted education policies, and the influence of elite education on career outcomes. He has been recognized with awards such as Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, multiple Mensa Awards, and the Education Week Top 200 Education Scholars ranking.
Wai’s grants include funding from Schmidt Futures, the Institute of Education Sciences, and the Walton Family Foundation. His publications in journals like Science, Nature Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, and Gifted Child Quarterly highlight interdisciplinary approaches to talent development and educational equity. He also serves on editorial boards for high-impact journals and advisory groups for organizations like MATHCOUNTS and the College Board Admissions Research Consortium.
