Dr. Jonathan Tsou serves as Professor of Philosophy and the Marvin and Kathleen Stone Distinguished Professor of Humanities in Medicine and Science at The University of Texas at Dallas within the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology. He directs the Center for Values in Medicine, Science, and Technology and joined UT Dallas in 2022 after 13 years as a philosophy professor at Iowa State University.
His academic credentials include a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Chicago (2008), an MA in Philosophy from the University of Western Ontario (2001), and a BA in Philosophy from Simon Fraser University (2000).
Dr. Tsou's research critically examines epistemological foundations in psychiatry and ethical dimensions of scientific practice, with particular focus on mental disorder classification systems, socially constructed aspects of mental illness, and pharmaceutical interventions. His interdisciplinary approach integrates philosophy of science, medical humanities, and sociocultural analysis to address how values permeate scientific and medical frameworks.
His publications reveal a sustained engagement with ethics in emerging technologies and psychiatric epistemology, demonstrating how philosophical inquiry can illuminate value-laden decisions in clinical practice and scientific methodology. The trajectory from Objectivity in Science (2015) to Technology Ethics (2023) shows increasing emphasis on digital ethics while maintaining core concerns about scientific legitimacy.
Major recognitions include the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship and multiple teaching awards during his tenure at Iowa State University. He actively shapes academic discourse through leadership roles in the Philosophy of Science Association (Governing Board), the Association for the Advancement of Philosophy and Psychiatry (Executive Council), and editorial service for Philosophy of Medicine.
As Director of the Center for Values in Medicine, Science, and Technology, Dr. Tsou cultivates an international research hub dedicated to analyzing cultural and ethical influences on scientific practice, with specific initiatives examining psychiatry's conceptual foundations and technology's societal impacts.
