Jonathan Truitt is a Professor of Latin American and World History in the Department of History, World Languages & Cultures at Central Michigan University, where he has served since 2009. He concurrently directs the university's Center for Learning through Games and Simulations (CLGS), bridging historical scholarship with educational innovation.
His educational background includes:
- B.A. from Gustavus Adolphus College (2000)
- M.A. from Minnesota State University, Mankato (2003)
- Ph.D. from Tulane University (2009)
Professor Truitt's research centers on Nahua-European encounters in colonial Mexico, particularly religious syncretism and cultural survival strategies during the 16th-17th centuries. His current work investigates colonial board games as sites of cultural negotiation, extending from his game-based pedagogy initiatives. This unique intersection of material culture studies and educational technology defines his scholarly contribution.
His publications demonstrate consistent engagement with colonial Latin American identity formation, spanning legal documents, religious transformation, and revolutionary upheavals. The trajectory from 'Native Wills' (2015) to 'Sustaining the Divine' (2018) and 'Mexico in Revolution' (2019) reveals deepening analysis of indigenous agency within imperial structures.
As CLGS director, he leads projects transforming historical research into interactive learning tools, creating opportunities for students to engage with history through simulation design while advancing his board game scholarship.
