Jonathan Topham is a Professor of History of Science at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science. He holds a PhD in History from Lancaster University (1993) and a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge (1987). His research focuses on the cultural history of science in late Georgian Britain, particularly scientific communication, science-religion interactions, and the history of the book. Notable works include Reading the Book of Nature (2022), awarded the 2023 ISSR Book Prize, and Science in the Nineteenth-Century Periodical (2004). He leads the Leverhulme-funded project Science for the People, exploring popular print culture’s role in shaping Victorian science.
Recent awards include the ISSR 2023 Book Prize and a Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grant (2022). He supervises over 20 PhD students, specializing in science communication, religious natural theology, and publishing history. Professional memberships span the British Society for the History of Science and the International Society for Science and Religion. His research groups include the Centre for History and Philosophy of Science and the Centre for the Comparative History of Print.
