Jonathan Singer is a Professor in the Department of Education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He holds a BA in Biochemistry from Brown University (1989), an MAT in Secondary Biology Teaching from Colgate University (1992), and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Science Education) from the University of Missouri-Columbia (1997). Before joining UMBC in 2007, he was on the faculty at the University of South Carolina (2000–2007), focusing on teacher professional development in science education.
His research emphasizes integrating technology to support student inquiry and has secured grants from the NSF and U.S. Department of Education. Current projects include UMBC’s Teacher Quality programs in Chemistry and Biology, the NSF-funded INSPIRES project (adapting professional development models), and the Noyce Scholars Program, which recruits STEM students into education. His work often explores situated professional development models, curriculum design, and teacher practice transformation.
Publications focus on professional development impacts, engineering integration in STEM classrooms, and inquiry-based pedagogy. Key contributions include studies in the Journal of Science Teacher Education and collaborative grant-funded initiatives.
