Jonathan Schad

Jonathan Schad is an Associate Professor in Strategy and Organization at the Department of Management and Organisation, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). Previously, he held roles as an Assistant Professor at King's College London and a visiting postdoctoral scholar at Bayes Business School (City, University of London), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. He earned his PhD in Management Studies from the University of Geneva (2017).

His research focuses on paradox theory, exploring how organizations manage competing demands such as stability vs. change, short-term vs. long-term goals, and profit vs. purpose. He has contributed to meta-theoretical advancements in paradox research and interdisciplinary dialogues in organizational studies. Key areas include systems perspectives, cultural leadership, and societal tensions during crises.

Teaching includes courses on strategic management and academic skills. Ancillary activities include roles as an Academic Fellow & External Lecturer at Université de Genève (since 2024) and External Lecturer at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (since 2024).

Awarded the Karen Legge Prize 2021, his work has been widely cited, with over 1,200 Mendeley readers for his pandemic crisis analysis. He actively organizes academic workshops and sub-themes at EGOS conferences, focusing on paradox theory’s potential to address complex organizational challenges.
