Jonathan Rose is a Full Professor and Head of the Department of Political Studies at Queen's University. His research focuses on Canadian politics, mass media, political communication, and deliberative democracy. He has held visiting professorships at institutions such as Victoria University of Wellington and Charles University in Prague. Rose chairs the Centre for the Study of Democracy and Diversity and serves on the Ontario College of Teachers' executive and committees. He has led citizen assemblies on electoral reform and has published extensively on political advertising and democratic engagement.
Education: PhD, MA (Queen's University); BA (University of Toronto). Research emphasizes citizen participation in policy processes, notably through his work on citizens' assemblies. He has served as Academic Director of the Ontario Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform and led projects in municipal governance, including the Prince Edward County Citizens’ Assembly. His international collaborations include studies on deliberative mini-publics and democratic innovation.
Teaching includes courses on power and politics, electoral systems, and political communication. Administrative roles include Undergraduate Chair of Political Studies and Educator in Residence at Queen’s Centre for Teaching & Learning. Rose has advised government bodies, including the Bank of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada, and contributed to public policy debates through op-eds and media commentary.
