Jonathan Ravn Karlsen is a Research Fellow at the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Center (DFCRC) and The University of Western Australia (UWA), with prior research roles at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Digital Currency Cooperative Research Center. He is affiliated with UWA's Finance department.

Dr. Karlsen's research centers on digital finance innovation's economic implications and unintended consequences, particularly illicit activities like darknet markets, ransomware, and money laundering through cryptocurrencies. He also investigates financial market integrity issues including market manipulation and insider trading. His work extends to cryptocurrency's environmental impact, analyzing energy consumption patterns and investor responses to sustainability transitions.
Recent publications reveal a strong focus on empirical analysis of cryptocurrency ecosystems, examining Bitcoin's viability as "digital gold," Ethereum's proof-of-stake transition, and quantification of illegal activities in blockchain networks. These studies demonstrate methodological rigor and have generated significant policy engagement.
He leads eight active research projects including measuring global market integrity and quantifying ransomware attacks, supported by grants from the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand and UWA. Dr. Karlsen teaches FINA5524 Trading and Markets and FINA5534 Digital Finance at UWA, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and sustainable economic growth.
