Jonathan Petropoulos is the John V. Croul Professor of European History at Claremont McKenna College. His research focuses on Nazi Germany, the Holocaust, art looting, and European aristocracy. He has held prestigious fellowships including the Alexander von Humboldt (2000-2001) and Royal Historical Society Fellow (2009–present). He served on the Presidential Advisory Commission on Holocaust Assets (1999–2000) and co-edits the 'Interdisciplinary German Cultural Studies' book series. Notable works include Göring’s Man in Paris (2021) and The Faustian Bargain (2000), recognized by the New York Public Library. His teaching awards include the Huntoon Senior Teaching Award (2002).
Education: B.A. UCLA (1983), M.A./Ph.D. Harvard (1990). Research emphasizes Nazi art plunder networks, aristocratic collaboration, and Holocaust memory. He has advised on cultural property restitution policies and contributed to ARTnews and European journals.
Awards include fellowships from Clare Hall (Cambridge, 2005–present), the Humboldt Foundation, and the American Council on Germany 'Young Leader' designation (1993). His work bridges historical scholarship with ethical questions about complicity and memory.
