Jonathan Newsome

Jonathan Newsome, Pharm.D., is a Clinical Associate Professor and current Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences at the University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler) Fisch College of Pharmacy. He holds a Pharm.D. from Xavier University of Louisiana (2008) and completed a PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency. Previously, he served as Associate Professor at South College School of Pharmacy (2012–2017) and Assistant Professor at Hampton University School of Pharmacy (2009–2012). His research focuses on addressing health disparities through ambulatory care and improving medication therapy access for underserved populations. He is actively involved in teaching pharmacotherapy courses and has held leadership roles in curriculum development and institutional committees at UT Tyler.

Education: Doctor of Pharmacy (Xavier University of Louisiana, 2008); PGY-1 Residency (Xavier/Rite Aid, 2008–2009).

Research interests include geriatric pharmacotherapy, medication therapy management, and public health initiatives targeting marginalized communities. He has authored peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Journal of Pharmacy Technology and American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, and has presented nationally on topics like hypertension management and virtual case studies in patient care.

Grants include leadership roles in projects like the East Texas Vaccine Awareness initiative ($82,875) and a study on pharmacist-led blood pressure reduction strategies. He has received multiple teaching awards, including the 2023 Xavier 40 Under 40 Alumni Award and the 2020 Clinical Sciences Teacher of the Year.

Labs/Teams: Leads institutional initiatives focused on health disparities and community outreach through programs like vaccination drives, diabetes health fairs, and health literacy campaigns.
